DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

This is my third and final image created during the loneliness topic. For some
reason I was very inspired these last couple of months.

Most everything interesting in this image is a height_field. The bricks and
mortar are two separate height fields. I had trouble matching the POV brick
pattern to a single height field, so I opted for two where I could control the
textures independently.

The cut outs in the cage (the floor and the door) are both height fields. And
the break accross the Menger Sponge is a height field.

The Menger Sponge took the longest to render out of these scene, because the
height_field is a difference of 160000 tiny cubes. I was able to speed up the
process by bounding each sub cube at each depth. It helped the rays find out
where to go like a binary search sort of, only with 20 branches at each level.
Hmmm, now that I think about it, I probably could speed it up much more, by
using a trinary bounding scheme, but I'll worry about that later.

I designed a cage similar to this way back in my college days, but lost the
source. I'm glad the loneliness theme caused me to recode it and put it in a
scene.

I did rerender a few squares of the image and paste them in with photoshop,
because I just didn't have time to rerender the whole image. The images would
have turned out exactly the same though if I had rerendered it completely.

I like the painted quality of this image, rather than photorealism.
