IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

A still life using typical items of rubbish.

This is my first attempt at the IRTC. The idea to do a still life came to me
within a few minutes of deciding to enter. It seems an obvious solution as to
how to arrange items of rubbish whilst subverting (a little) the classic still
life image.

DESCRIPTION OF HOW THIS IMAGE WAS CREATED:

I started with a cloth for the items to be placed on. Using the excellent
tutorial at http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/isotut/ I added a cube to the bump
pattern to give a flattened area for the rubbish to sit on. The bowl was simple
csg. Next came the can which has another povray image (included in the zip
file) mapped onto it. Then came the banana skins which were isosufaces and csg.
I wanted these hanging over the bowl to give some interaction between the
objects. Next came the the apple, which is my favorite, again isosufaces, a
noisy torus for the eaten section subtracted from a apple shaped torus, then
some csg to give the apple skin separatly (I wasted a lot of time on the apple
texture, which I eventually gave up on for a simple green). The scrunched paper
was another isosurface with a newspaper image (that's my only cheat). Then the
bottle to the left gave some balance to the picture. The drops are based on the
Gilles Tran make snow macro. Next came the sandwich wrapper, csg again with
some foody substance isosurface in the bottom. Finally I added the fly which
seemed apt and added a little bit of detail for the eye.

After the main scene was composed I added some boxes/windows around the scene
for more interesting reflections and messed around with the lighting positions
until I was happy.

Inevitably I returned to change some things and revisited the bottle
top, changing to a screw top (helix), added background walls (of isosurface
weave) and a bicubic patch cellophane lid for the sandwich box which again
helped balance out the top right of the picture.

Returned again and changed the back walls to tiles (I suppose evoking a kitchen
setting) and the cloth to a patterned tablecloth like texture.

Then still not happy I moved the sandwich box down to the bottom left which was
a bit sparse and added a shoe into the bowl.

Wasn't happy with the shoe model and didn't have time to model a better one so
decided to add some different objects. Started with a carboard tube and added a
sweet wrapper and milk carton, the milk carton is an isosurface box with
ripples with some prisms used for the upper folding bits. Then added some
speckles of food (texture map with one transparent texture in a granite
pattern) to the sandwich wrapper.

Finally I decided to call it a day although I could have gone on endlessly
changing the composition/lighting but I just didn't have the time
unfortunately. It was an interesting process and I learned a lot.

(Then came back and turned milk carton to Orange carton as the white colour
blended into scrunched paper.)

Matt Milton.

(I have supplied all the source except for the newspaper image, you'll have to
find or create one. The picture on the can is created using the canpic.pov
file)
